How to install Sage BusinessVision v7.2

Here are instructions for installing Sage BusinessVision v7.2 on a new computer, newly added to your network.

This page assumes the following:

  • You are familiar with computers and installing software
  • You are installing BusinessVision on a brand new computer, or one that has a new hard drive, with no traces of Pervasive or BusinessVision present on it. In other words, a clean install.
If you have copied BusinessVision or Pervasive files from an existing computer, such as with Ghost or some other cloning software, then this is not a clean install! Particularly if registry entries have been copied over!
  • You are installing BusinessVision into a network where BusinessVision is already installed. In other words, you are adding a new computer to the network and now need to have BusinessVision running on it.
  • Nothing out of the ordinary will happen and nothing will go wrong.

THIS IS NOT A TROUBLESHOOTING PAGE. As with any software, there are many reasons why the installation may not work, or why the program may not work once it is installed.

This page will not instruct you on how to set up a brand new installation of BusinessVision, ie to configure and set up the software properly. This requires the assistance of a professional, qualified and experienced BusinessVision consultant, such as Walter Muma of Wildwood Canada.

You must be logged on to the computer as a user who has Local Administrator rights in order to install BusinessVision.

There are five main steps

  1. Copy the BusinessVision licenses
  2. Install BusinessVision (which will also install Pervasive for you)
  3. Configure Pervasive
  4. Install the latest updates for BusinessVision (Payroll update &/or the latest service pack)
  5. Modify the BusinessVision Company List

Copy the BusinessVision Licenses

The next step is to place the BusinessVision licenses on the new computer. The most reliable way to do this is as follows:

L1. On a computer that is already running BusinessVision, open up drive C:

L2. Go into C:\BusinessVision and find a folder called "LIC". At all Wildwood Canada clients, this is where I have placed the licenses for BusinessVision (there are only a couple of exceptions).

L3. Copy this folder along with the files in it to the new computer. Place it in exactly the same place, ie you will end up with C:\BusinessVision\LIC. You will have to create the C:\BusinessVision folder first.

L4. Inside the LIC folder there should be one or more files with names such as shown below. Yours may differ from what is in this picture.

Install BusinessVision

Now you are ready to install the BusinessVision program itself.

B1. Allow the CD to autorun. Depending on which version you are installing, the screens you see may vary slightly. If the CD will not autorun, then run "launch.exe" or "setup.exe".

B2. Click on "Install BusinessVision" to start the installation.

B3. Click "Next"

B4. "Standard licensing" should already be selected. Click "Next".

B5. Select "I accept ..." and then Click "Next".

B6. The next screen is very important. Here is where you tell the installation program where the BusinessVision license files are located.

It defaults to C:\BusinessVision. You will need to change that.

Click "Browse" and change the location to C:\BusinessVision\LIC, as shown here

...ending up with the following result.

Click Next and you will find out if you copied the license files properly.

B7. If you did not copy the license files properly, ie, if the proper license files are not present in C:\BusinessVision\LIC, then the following screen will appear. This screen will NOT appear if the proper license files are indeed present in the specified location.

At this point you will need to click "Back", and ensure that the license files are in C:\BusinessVision\LIC before proceeding.

You have three other choices available to you:

  1. Obtain your serial number and activation code and type them in manually on the next screen, or
  2. Install a 30-day trial license of BusinessVision ("I will register within 30 days"), or
  3. Ask Wildwood Canada to come in and install the product for you.

Copying the license files to a different location will NOT make any difference. They can be located in any place on the computer. I have chosen to standardize on C:\BusinessVision\LIC.

B8. If you did copy the license files correctly, then the following screen will appear if you have not already installed Pervasive.

B9. If you are running Pervasive v9.6 on your network, this is where the installation of it takes place. Ensure that "Sage BusinessVision..." is selected (you will see that choice if you are installing the Client-Server edition) and click "Next"; accept whatever defaults are presented to you. If asked to install the Java runtime environment, say "Yes". When  the Pervasive installation has completed you will see the screen in the next step.

DO NOT MIX versions of Pervasive on the same network. If you are unsure about what version to install or run, please do not proceed without assistance. To check which version you are running, go to the bottom of this page.

If you need to run Pervasive v8.7, then you need to quit the installation of BusinessVision at this point and install it per the instructions at the bottom of this page.
If you did install it and you see the above screen, then you have a problem and cannot proceed further without assistance.

B10. If you have already installed Pervasive, then you will not see that screen, but the following one. Select "Typical" and click "Next".

B11. Click "Next" at the following screen to accept the location to install the BusinessVision program...

B12. And "Next" again to accept the default folder. Please note this is NOT the location of your existing BusinessVision data.

B13. Click "Next" to accept the default selection. Again, this does not refer to your existing BusinessVision data.

B14. Click "Next to accept the default selection. Again, this does not refer to your existing BusinessVision data.

B15. Click "Next" and the main installation of the software will begin.

B16. Installation progress...

B17. At the end you will see this screen. Click "Next".

B18. Almost done... Usually the computer will require a reboot before the next step.

Configure Pervasive settings

One last, but important step is left to do: Pervasive must be properly configured. The instructions are actually on another page of this website. Go do that, then come back here.

  • If you are running Pervasive v8.7, go here.
  • If you are running Pervasive v9.6 or v10, go here.

Install the Payroll Update and/or the latest Service Pack

After you reboot, you will need to install either the latest Payroll Update (if you use Payroll) or the latest service pack. The Payroll Update usually requires another reboot of your computer.

BusinessVision Company List

Once BusinessVision is installed, you will need to modify the Company List. Follow one of these two options:

  1. Start BusinessVision and enter the default company presented to you. The username is "Business" and the password is "vision". Then modify the company list per the instructions on <this page>. First remove the default BusinessVision company that was added to the list.
  2. On another computer copy two files from C:\BusinessVision: MULTICO.IDX and MULTICO.ISM. Copy these files into C:\BusinessVision on the computer you are working on.

YOU'RE DONE!

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: Installing Pervasive

If you are running a version of Pervasive on your network OTHER THAN v9.6, then please read this section.

You first need to know which version of Pervasive is installed on your network. It is not a good idea to mix versions of Pervasive on the same network!

If you simply run the BusinessVision installation CD for v7.2 and follow the suggested steps, Pervasive v9.6 will be automatically installed. But if you are not already running Pervasive v9.6 on the rest of your workstations and server, you will encounter problems!

Many Wildwood Canada clients who are using BusinessVision v7.2 are running Pervasive v8.7, for a number of reasons.

To determine the version of Pervasive running, go to a workstation that is already running BusinessVision. On the screen at the bottom right on the taskbar beside the clock will be a Pervasive icon, as show below. Right-click that icon and select "About". A message will display showing what version of Pervasive that computer is running. That version must be installed on the new computer.

This computer is running Pervasive v8.7

If you determine that you need to install Pervasive v9.6, then simply allow the v7.2 CD to autorun. Skip to the next section, BusinessVision Licenses.

If you determine that you need to install Pervasive v8.7, follow these steps:

P1. On the v7.2 CD that I supplied to the client, locate the "Pervasive v8.7" folder.

P2. Inside that folder you will find a folder named "wge"

P3. Inside there run Setup.exe. Follow all defaults, agree with everything, install to the suggested location.
